Rookie Brandon Saad continues improving game by game for Hawks

More NHL Playoffs: | | | | |CHICAGO -- When you have a team that's as deep as the , you never have a shortage of good payers not getting enough credit. You could almost even say that the stars like Marian Ho sa, and don't get enough of that, there's so much love to spread around. It leads to a situation where a player like goes pretty well unnoticed, which is a bit of a shame. Saad, after his regular season play earned him a spot as a finalist for the Calder Trophy given to the league's top rookie, had gone mi sing in the playoffs. Well, mi sing on the stats sheets, that is.Stanley Cup Final Like he did in the regular season, Saad has been getting progre sively better as the games get bigger to the point where he was one of Chicago's better players in Game 1. Truly. It has earned him a promotion back to the place he was for a good portion of the season; the Blackhawks' top line with Toews and Ho sa. That's what happens when your team with you on the ice at 5-on-5 as the Hawks did in Game 1.For the rookie, obviously experiencing his first playoff run, it's been a situation of just getting more comfortable. And confident. Playing with two superstars on the top line again will do that for a guy."It means a lot to be on the top line ," Saad said Friday after the Blackhawks practiced. "For them to show the confidence in me helps you get more confidence in yourself. To get back on a line with Jonny and Ho s means a lot." Despite not starting Game 1 with those players, thats where he ended the game, a validation of his improved play in the postseason.Mixing lines really is nothing new for coach Joel Quenneville. Most of the time, teams that get this far in the playoffs have a set situation with their lines, guys with a lot of chemistry together. Take the Bruins, for example. They have had the same four lines -- deviated from only by injury -- all postseason. The Blackhawks have hardly had the same lines all game, let alone from game to game."I think most of the guys over the course of the season played with one another," Quenneville said. "Sometimes it's the matchups, sometimes maybe it's just mixing it up, some guys on a merit basis if they're playing well. Sometimes you try things." Really, it speaks to their depth on the Blackhawks, the ability to constantly put different guys into the top six and continue having succe s. That depth gives Quenneville the ability to juggle things as Juancho Hernangomez Jersey he sees fit, whether it be for defensive purposes or to get somebody going. Or even, as Quenneville said, it's based on merit.Stanley Cup FinalThat's how we end up with Saad back on top. Saad finally scored his first goal of the playoffs in Game 1 of the Final, a big goal that gave Chicago some life."It felt great, especially in a game like that where we were down 2-0 and to cut the lead in half," Saad said. "It was a big goal and it felt really good. You always want to produce out there and it didn't happen before so I'm glad it happened last game."While he finally got some notice with Ed Davis Jersey his goal, his play had been good and getting better by the game. He has been very good on the forecheck all postseason, contributing in ways beyond just scoring since he wasn't doing that. He has been making things happen, especially since the Western Conference finals began.. It might have gone unnoticed in the stats but the Hawks certainly see it."He's another one of those guys, he's been around the net so much, he's had so many chances that people don't tend to notice until he finally scores one," Toews said of Saad. "I'm sure it's a huge relief for him. As a line we played great, did some good things last game. To have Saader back on the scoresheet like that gives him so much more confidence that he can go out there and make plays in every area of the rink. I think that's just what scoring goals does for you. It's good for our line overall."Whichever line that is -- right now it's on the top -- it doesn't really matter. The Hawks mix and match so much that you have to be ready to go."Regardle s of what line you're on it doesn't matter, you're coming to play in the Stanley Cup playoffs," Saad said. "Our third line had a lot of great chances out there and played pretty well. Regardle s of what line you're on you're coming to work and to do your job." He's been doing his job in the playoffs, that's certain. The Blackhawks don't really care where they get the scoring from, just so long as they get the scoring. It gives them the flexibility to play with those combinations. If everybody is doing their job, the results will come. That's how it is for Saad. Was it a bit frustrating not to be scoring through the first three rounds of the playoffs? Yes, but only a little. More than anything it's just wanting to get a payoff for your solid work. The real benefactor, though, is the Blackhawks team.
